How much should I pay for an alpaca? That's a question we get asked often.
You will hear from some ranchers "get the best alpaca you can afford". We took a
different approach to alpaca ranching. We bought 3 lower priced alpacas and one
blue ribbon winner. Our thoughts were, the more alpacas you have in year 1 the greater
number you will have in years 3 and 4. If you start out in year 1 with 4 alpacas, in year 3
you will have 12. If you start out in year 1 with 2 expensive alpacas, in year 3 you will
have 6. It made sense to us to have more in year one. We know that you can always
breed up in quality.

In the picture above you will see Robin (Black head/ white lips) and her cria this year
(fawn color). Robin has coarse fiber and does not have long staple length, but her cria
is a beautiful little girl. She has crimp, handle, density and excellent staple length. This
shows that you can breed up in quality. We believe you should spend a little more on
one or two excellent studs and use them to breed up in quality. As you can see there are
many ways to choose from when it comes to creating a herd. The way we did it is just
one of many.
